How to Give Your Horse a Balanced Diet

How to give your horse a balanced diet:
Perhaps you have one of those horses that easily gains weight, you know, an easy keeper. Or maybe you have a horse that has a hard time keeping or gaining weight, a hard keeper.

First, you need to keep in mind that both horses require the same amount of nutrients. The difference is in their calorie requirement. Since an easy keeper needs fewer calories, most people would feed the horse a small amount of compounded feed. And for a hard keeper, they would feed more.

It all seems fine. But, there is actually a problem with this feeding method.

You see, in compounded feeds, nutrients and calories go hand in hand. So if you feed an easy keeper just a small amount of feed, your horse is not getting enough nutrients. When you feed more to a hard keeper, your horse is getting too many nutrients.

Because both, under and over supplementation of nutrients is bad for your horse, we call this the balancing problem created by compounded feeds.

So, what is the solution? You should feed nutrients and calories separately!

That is why we developed Barn Bag: a concentrated nutrient source that barely contains any calories.
This is how you use it: Since both horses need the same amount of nutrients, first, feed your horse a fixed amount of Barn Bag.

Now that the nutrient part is taken care of, you need to address the need for calories: less for the easy keeper, and more for the hard keeper. For both horses, grass hay or pasture should be the main source for calories. If additional calories are needed, we recommend whole oats, beet pulp, or vegetable oil.

As you can see, there is no need to use compounded feeds!

To recap: Feed grass and hay for forage, barn bag for nutrients, and add calories for working horses or to maintain weight. This diet prevents under and over supplementation of nutrients, and gives your horse a truly balanced diet!
