How to catch sandeels and sand smelts

Live Sandeels are a devastating bait, catching almost every fish that swims. Probably the best bait for catching bass. Sand smelts are also a fantastic bait for bass and freshwater predators such as pike and perch love them. The video shows you how how easy it is to catch your own sandeels (both lesser and greater sandeels or launce) and sand smelts. I also show you how to store the livebaits without the need for a livewell or battery powered airstone. Simples!

The best locations to catch sandeels are areas of sand or sand bars, especially at the mouths of estuaries. Sandeels tend to bury themselves in the sand at night, but come out and swim during the day. Sand smelts prefer brackish water in sheltered areas for example further up an estuary. Smelts are usually found in shoals, and in the video you will see the shoals of sand smelts appear on the fish finder.
