To establish a home base for your flock you need to lock them in their coop 24/7 for 5-7days. This is best done during more mild or moderate times of the year to avoid overheating during the summer time. This is the one time where food and water has to be in the coop- although I suggest removing both at night. After this first week when they’ve established the coop as home you can open up the coop door during daylight hours and move their food and water out into the run. Keep them confined to their coop and run for an additional 7-10 days. During this time they should be coming in and out of the coop as they please, but should be going into the coop on their own at night. Sometimes very young birds will gather around the door but seemingly “Forget” how to go in. You may have to help those ones onto the roost. If your flock already has an established home base introducing them to free ranging is as easy as opening the run door and letting them out.
