“Let me say that Guyana should be proud of these elections and of its democracy. Guyana is a vibrant democracy. And yes there are some persistent issues that have undermined trust between the parties at different times, and that lack of trust is very important. But Guyana has a robust democracy and the people of Guyana truly embraced their democratic values.”

“We have been in every single tabulation center, 97% of the reports that we have received regarding tabulation recorded that tabulation was being conducted in accordance and was good and all of them said they were doing it in accordance to the law. So that process is cumbersome, but it is ongoing, it is transparent, and once it is complete, I think people will have trust in the result.”

STORYLINE:
Votes were still being counted on Wednesday after thousands of Guyanese participated in elections that many in the South American country say are the most consequential in decades.

Final results are expected on Thursday.

Observers from the Carter Center, led by Jason Carter, grandson of former US President Jimmy Carter, held a news conference to announce that they observed no significant glitches in the electoral process, and that the population should “trust the results.”

Whichever party wins will oversee 10 billion US dollars in annual revenue from offshore oil and gas production. In recent years, Guyana has transformed from a country traditionally dependent on gold, sugar, rice, bauxite and timber to one reaping the windfall of nearly 900,000 barrels of oil produced daily.

The World Bank has noted that Guyana has the world’s fastest growing economy with gross domestic product increases averaging around 15% annually in the past six years.

The six parties that participated in Monday’s election are fighting for the presidency and seats in the 65-member Parliament.
