STORYLINE:
Hundreds of faithful took part in an procession marking Orthodox Good Friday in the Greek seaside town of Tolo.

A flower-decorated epitaph representing the tomb of Christ was carried into the sea, while fishermen set flares alight.

The custom was revived in recent years and was created by Cretans who colonised the area. The huge procession draws mass public interest and admiration annually.

Watching from the shoreline, Manolia Fasou described it as a "beautiful and special custom".

Greeks were preparing to celebrate Orthodox Easter on Sunday, five weeks before a general election and in the middle of a cost of living crisis.

The holiday ‒ the most important on the Orthodox religious calendar ‒ is typically celebrated with candlelight midnight church services, spring decorations, coloured eggs and a Sunday meal of spit-roasted lamb.

Easter for Orthodox Christians typically falls on a different and later Sunday than the date celebrated by the Catholic and Protestant faiths.
