Who is the most adventurous person who has ever lived?

There are two people that come to mind:

Richard Burton, the famous explorer (not the actor) who traveled the world and had many amazing adventures for the glory of the British Empire. He traveled the world, sought the source of the Nile, explored with Livingtone, surveyed and battled with natives; unknown to many, he translated "The Kama Sutra" and the "1001 Arabian Nights" into English which were considered pornography in his time. He was a linguist and soldier, he was a surveyor and author. About him was written by the Sufis, "Do what thy manhood bids thee do/ from none but self expect
applause;/ He noblest lives and noblest dies/ who makes and keeps his
self-made laws".

Ernest Shackleton, of "Endurance" fame. In a tie I would pick Shackleton because he lead the Endurance team for a few years, trapped in ice, sought rescue in an open boat during winter over 1000 miles of stormy ocean, crossed a rocky island to a whaling station with nothing but an axe and a length of rope and two friends, and DIDN'T LOSE A SINGLE MAN. Then, after being rescued, he set out to do it again!

The Runner Up in my opinion is Charles Lightoller, the highest ranking officer to survive the Titanic. That was just one of his amazing adventures. In his lifetime he was a gold miner in Canada, a hobo who tramped across the US hopping trains, sailed tall ships, was stranded on a desert island, fought off cannibals and pirates, saved a burning ship and the passengers, commanded a destroyer in WW1, ramming a German sub and shooting down a zeppelin, won the Victoria Cross, was an author, sheep farmer, developer and participated in the rescue of British soldiers in Dunkirk. He was a true adventurer and hero.

Marco Polo. He was an Italian merchant traveler in the 1200’s, long before there were cellphones, road signs, language translators or any of the things we take for granted today. Yet he traveled through many countries including China and was the first European to do so and write about it for future generations. His writings inspired the likes of Christopher Columbus and countless other travelers over the centuries since then.

When I was 24 travelling away from home for the first time (I'm Canadian) I ended up in a tiny hotel overlooking the Gibraltar Straight in Tangiers, Morocco in North Africa. The first night an old man had seen me in the lobby as the only other guest at the hotel, he told me he had found some beers in a neighbouring town and asked me if I wanted a few. Alcohol is hard to come by in Morocco so it truly was great after multiple days of travel. In fact, it was much easier to find hash which I ended up buying some from a man as he pleaded with me to buy in order to support his family, so I showed the old man how to smoke hash with limited resources.

You drop the hash on the end of a lit cigarette and have the resulting smoke fill a plastic bottle with the bottom cut out while covering the opening, then breathe in the contents.

Anyway I ended up learning that he had been travelling for over 40 years. He was in his sixties and had left home from the U.S. as a hippy when he was a teenager. Originally he had planned on spending the summer travelling but he just didn't stop, and has spent his entire life on the road. He was successful as well, and told me about how he had a wife in Thailand because he was considered rich in the country, so that was his home base. I'll never forget that guy, he was truly the most adventurous man I've met to this day and he made my little 3 month trip to Europe seem like a short vacation compared to his ongoing adventure. He's made me revolve my life around travelling when I can. I hope to spend another 3-4 months travelling in 2017.
