On September 18th, 1990, the Native American civil rights movement was officially re-sparked after a diverse group of Mohawk villagers of Kahnawake faced off against the Army of Canada to keep them from invading the homes and bully them anymore.
This was not the force of former Vietnam vet led warriors, but Mohawk people of all levels of Mohawk culture including children, the elderly, lacrosse moms and yes, the enraged father in red tossing soldiers around(his daughter had been hit in the face during the Army's first volley of teargas). It was in a sense, and for the first time that summer, a community response to the Army. And while the Flag of the Indian against the Sun had been controversial and inspired by the warrior society faction, it became something more that day - it brought a smile to even the face of one of the most peace wanting residents. It became a symbol of fighting back 500 years. You will find it at most Native American demonstrations including Standing Rock
Magik Squirrel was there throughout most of the Oka Crisis and this film captures life that summer in a way that has never been told before.
It was the summer Magik Squirrel became not Mohawk, but squirrel.
