The Boycott: In protest against FISA's rulings, the FOCA teams (Brabham, Williams, McLaren, Lotus, etc.) boycotted the event. Only 14 cars from 7 teams (Ferrari, Renault, Alfa Romeo, Tyrrell, Osella, ATS, Toleman) started the race.

The Ferrari Feud: After the Renaults retired, Gilles Villeneuve led, believing Ferrari's orders to "slow down" meant holding positions. Teammate Didier Pironi ignored this, passing Villeneuve on the final lap to steal the win. A furious Villeneuve vowed never to speak to Pironi again. Tragically, he was killed in qualifying for the next race.
