50 years ago, Thimmappa and his wife set up three tables in a rented outhouse in Udupi that they called home, to earn a livelihood by serving a simple meal of fish fry, curry and rice. Over the years, the fish fry, slathered in a secret masala made by the couple, and their sons thereafter, gained favour with locals who would flock to this home that carried no name. Five years ago, his son, Sathish Kotian finally put up a nameboard as a tribute to his late father’s culinary legacy that has endured decades since the eatery’s modest beginnings. In this episode, I visit Hotel Thimmappa Fish Meals to chat with Kotian and also taste some of the seafood delicacies here. Hope you enjoy this one. Take care and stay safe.

Fish Meal
The fish meal is a simple affair here, there’s rice, a tasty curry made with small-sized, inexpensive fish, a vegetable for the day and some pickle. And to complete this, one picks from the selection of fish fry (charged extra) proffered by attendants who scurry between the tables and the kitchen. Whether one has a budget of under Rs. 100 or 300, one is assured of a satisfying fish meal at Thimmappa.

Kane Rava Fry
This was a plump lady fish, the semolina forming the perfect crunchy crumb over a veil of perfectly spiced masala encasing the flakey delicate flesh of the fish. One of the best kane rava fry preparations that I have tasted.
Rs. 100 - 250 (usd 1.3 to 2.7) depending on size

Disco Fish
The perfect fish fry for those on a budget. The fish is meaty, it is mild in its flavours and readily embraces the vivacious strength of the masala.
Rs. 40 - 50 (usd 0.5 to 0.7) depending on size

Prawn Ghee Roast
The prawns are swathed in a robust masala, the flavour of the ghee complements the slight hint of sweetness in the prawns.
Rs. 200 (usd 2.7)
8.5/10

Fish Kebab
Kingfish deep fried in a spicy Koliwada batter, a touch of the Konkan coast in Udupi.
Rs. 200 (usd 2.7)

Pomfret Fry
The pomfret exemplifies the fish fry preparation at Hotel Thimmappa. Aided by the sizzling hot tawa and lashings of coconut oil, the fish has the perfect masala crust encasing its moist and meaty flesh. If you are lucky to find it on the fish fry tray, go for the biggest pomfret.
Rs. 200 - 300 (usd 2.7 to 4) depending on size
10/10

Prawn Pepper Fry
The pepper intensifies the sweetness of the prawns, and the toasted flavour of curry leaf lends a savoury note to the delightful crunch of this deep-fry.
Rs. 160 (usd 2.2) for a full portion, I tasted a sample portion of this dish.
