"Born in Halle, Germany, Rohde studied under the prominent organist August Gottfried Ritter and established himself in Berlin, where he served as choirmaster at the St. Georgenkirche and as a singing teacher at the Sophien-Gymnasium. Among his pupils was the American composer and organist Arthur Bird, and his own son, Eduard Rohde Jr. (1856–1900), also became an organist and composer.

Rohde’s compositional output was extensive and varied, encompassing piano pieces, motets, part-songs, instrumental and vocal works. He is remembered for works such as “Tanz der Libellen,” “Marionetten,” “Album Leaf,” “Schmetterling,” and “Elfenreigen.” His music often displays a lyrical charm and was popular in educational and salon settings, with several collections aimed at young or amateur musicians, such as his “Kinder-Klavierschule” and various easy arrangements of folk and children’s songs. Rohde died in Berlin at the age of 54, leaving behind a legacy of accessible and melodious works that contributed to the domestic and choral repertoire of nineteenth-century Germany."
