In week 5 of the 1971 NFL season, the New York Jets and head coach Weeb Ewbank announced that Bob Davis was going to be taking over as the starting quarterback of the team for Al Woodall and the injured Joe Namath. Davis, a notoriously bad quarterback, stepped under center against the Buffalo Bills, and delivered what has to be the most surprising start in the over 60-year history of the Jets franchise.
