Released on September 12, 1947, Popeye and the Pirates is a theatrical animated short by Famous Studios, directed by Seymour Kneitel and Dave Tendlar. While sailing, Popeye and Olive Oyl spot an old pirate ship and are captured by Captain Pierre. Pierre woos Olive with stolen jewels, forces Popeye to walk the plank, and even deals with a disguise trick when Popeye dresses as a woman to try to rescue Olive. A passing swordfish reading a Popeye comic helps by giving Popeye spinach from its comic-cover. Powered up, Popeye returns to the ship, defeats Pierre in a swordfight, and uses him as a spinning top to overcome the remaining pirates.
