Dr. Monaghan is a distinguished expert in stroke rehabilitation, with over three decades of clinical, academic, and research experience in Ireland and internationally. He holds a PhD in 3D motion analysis from University College Dublin and a Master’s in Sports Medicine. Since joining Atlantic Technological University (formerly IT Sligo) in 2012, he has served as a lecturer in Health Science and leads both the Clinical Health & Nutrition Centre (CHANCE) and the Neuroplasticity Research Group (NRG). Dr. Monaghan’s career began in sports medicine and musculoskeletal physiotherapy, but over the past 20 years, he has specialized in neurology and stroke rehabilitation, working in both hospital and community settings in Ireland and the United States.
A central focus of Dr. Monaghan’s work is the development and implementation of innovative, home-based rehabilitation strategies for stroke survivors. He is a passionate advocate for empowering caregivers and patients to take an active role in recovery, emphasizing the brain’s remarkable capacity for neuroplasticity. His research has led to the invention of the Mirror Strengthening Brace (MSB), for which he holds a UK patent, and the ongoing development of a Mechatronic Managed Rehabilitation (MMR) workstation to facilitate independent rehabilitation with professional feedback. Dr. Monaghan has published extensively, presented at numerous international conferences, and built collaborations with leading neurology experts worldwide.
Dr. Monaghan’s commitment to translating research into practice is most evident in his book, Lights, Mirrors, Action: A Guide to Transforming the Lives of Caregivers and Stroke Survivors. This practical guide is designed to help caregivers confidently manage home-based rehabilitation for stroke survivors, providing step-by-step instructions for implementing evidence-based therapies such as mirror therapy and sensory substitution25. The book demystifies neuroplasticity, offers structured daily routines, and includes tools for tracking progress and adjusting care plans. Dr. Monaghan’s approach balances scientific rigor with compassion, aiming to reduce the stress and uncertainty faced by families after a stroke. Lights, Mirrors, Action stands out as a valuable resource for both new and experienced caregivers, delivering expert guidance to optimize recovery and foster a supportive home environment.
