Lower extremity edema or swelling could be a symptom of underlying severe diseases like CKD, glomerulonephritis, cirrhosis of liver, congestive heart failure and many drugs and medicines could cause it too. When you have edema around yes or ankles you must see a doctor to find out what could be the possible etiology. If you know the cause than it can be treated well. Treatment involves not only treating underlining cause but limiting salt and water intake , stopping the offending drug and use of diuretics. Nephrotic syndrome is treated with immunosuppressive agents as well. Sometimes a kidney biopsy is needed to diagnose it well. Early treatment can lead to full recovery. You should never ignore even a mild edema or swelling around legs.
