Kalinjar Fort - This fort was built by the Chandelas which represents a grand architecture of the reign of the Chandela dynasty. There are many buildings and temples inside this fort. One of the main attractions of this fort is the Neelkanth Temple which is built inside the fort. Statues of Lord Shiva, Kaal Bhairav, Ganesh, Nandi and other gods are carved on the stones on the way to the temple.

Neelkanth Mahadev Temple (Inside Kalinjar Fort)

Inside the fort lies the famous Neelkanth Mahadev Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva.

According to legend, during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean), when Lord Shiva drank the deadly Halahal poison to save the world, His throat turned blue. It is believed that He came to Kalinjar hill to meditate, which is why the Shiva Linga here is called Neelkantheshwar Mahadev.

The temple houses a massive Shiva Lingam, which attracts devotees and visitors from across the country.








The inscriptions and sculptures inside the temple date back to the 9th–11th century, built during the rule of the Chandela kings, showcasing remarkable artistry.

Architecture & Features

The temple entrance and sanctum are decorated with intricate stone carvings.

The walls and pillars depict deities, celestial figures, and inscriptions.

Nearby are several caves and water tanks (kunds), which hold great spiritual significance.

The site is not only a place of worship but also a valuable cultural and historical heritage.

Religious Importance

On Maha Shivaratri and during the holy month of Sawan (Shravan), thousands of devotees visit the temple.

It is believed that sincere worship at Neelkanth Mahadev fulfills the wishes of devotees.
