In honor of those impacted by sickle cell disease, Janiyah's Love Sickle Cell Foundation is hosting the Red Balloon Walk this weekend. The event, marking the foundation's tenth anniversary, will take place on Saturday, with sign-ups beginning at 7:30 a.m. and the walk starting at 8 a.m. on Crockett Street.

Letitte Buxie, founder of Janiyah's Love Sickle Cell Foundation, said the event aims to spread awareness and bring more light to sickle cell disease. "Janiyah was my granddaughter who passed away from sickle cell disease at the age of seven," Buxie said. "At that time, there was very little known about sickle cell, so we decided to form a foundation."

The walk will feature speakers, testimonies from survivors, a DJ, food vendors, and activities for children. Buxie emphasized the importance of providing knowledge and information for those struggling with the disease. "A lot of people don't know about the disease," Buxie said. "A lot of people learn from the survivors and people who have been through it."

Buxie noted that in Jefferson County alone, there are over 2,000 hospital visits related to sickle cell each year. "It's a really prevalent thing, especially in our county," Buxie said. "It's a disease that can impact any person at any age."
The foundation offers year-round support, including education, referrals, transportation, and care packages. "It's not a one-month event, even though September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month," Buxie said. "It's a year-round event."

Participants can register for the walk at janiyahslove.org or on the day of the event.
