BIG POWDER DAY; Furano 富良野 Freeride

Sometimes the best days are the ones where you go up without too much expectations. It had snowed quite a lot overnight, but the previous time we had been up the lifts on Furano Ski Resort, the powder had been heavy and dense. We had expected better, so were a little disappointed.

This time though, the conditions far exceeded our expectations. This was a very good day!
We were back to the usual Central Hokkaido powder quality which is very low density snow that send giant rooster tails.

Lift lines have been almost non-existent mid-week during the pandemic. Omicron numbers have started to increase around Japan and skiers from other parts of Japan have not been coming to Furano in the same numbers.

We lodged our intentions form with the Furano Ski Patrol with our personal details and the gates that we were going to be exiting from. This system started around 4-5 seasons ago.

On a good powder day, Furano is one of the best ski resorts in Hokkaido for the out of bounds terrain that you can access. Open and tree-less areas fan down the mountain down to a certain elevation before skiing out through a forest of well spaced trees.
