What is a Vanillyl Mandelic Acid (VMA) Urine Test?

VMA is a screening test performed on a 24-hour urine sample. This test detects tumors that produce catecholamines such as ganglioneuroma and neuroblastoma. Catecholamines are hormones secreted by the adrenal glands located above the nerves and kidneys.

These hormones increase your blood pressure, heart rate and metabolism in response to mental and emotional stress.

People with neuroblastoma and other catecholamine-producing tumors have higher levels of VMA in their urine.

This test is primarily recommended to detect neuroblastoma. Neuroblastoma is a tumor that forms in immature nerve cells (neuroblasts) of the adrenal glands, spinal cord, neck or chest. This tumor is usually seen in children.

Doctors recommend a VMA test when they notice the following symptoms of neuroblastoma in a child:

Abnormal swelling or lumps in the abdomen, throat and chest

Bone pain

Painless blue bumps on the skin

Difficulty breathing

Protruding eyes

Dark circles around the eyes

Weakness in arms and legs

Other symptoms of neuroblastoma that are not usually visible include:

Fever

High blood pressure

Enlarged lymph nodes

Easy bruising and bleeding

Feeling tired

Drooping eyelids

Muscle twitching

Uncontrolled eye movements
