Since September 2, 1952, crossing the Mile-High Swinging Bridge has made hearts soar and knees weak for generations of North Carolinians. In 1952, At the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Swinging Bridge, CBS newsman Charles Kuralt put the landmark into perspective in his own inimitable way. Hugh Morton inherited Grandfather Mountain from his grandfather and immediately launched plans to build a road to the top where he would construct a bridge to connect Linville Peak to Convention Table Rock.
