⚔️ What Makes This Story Extraordinary: Francis Currey wasn't a career soldier or elite commando—he was a math teacher who wanted to help kids learn. When he was drafted, he failed the vision test for pilot training and became an infantryman instead. He landed at Normandy, fought through France, and arrived in Belgium exhausted and understrength. Then came December 21, 1944.

German forces launched the Battle of the Bulge, the largest battle fought by the U.S. Army in Europe. Five Panther tanks and hundreds of German infantry attacked Currey's battalion position. Officers were killed. The line was collapsing. Someone had to stop those tanks or 300 Americans would die. Francis Currey climbed out of his foxhole, grabbed a bazooka, and walked into the German fire alone.

For thirty minutes, Currey fought an entire German battalion by himself. He destroyed five tanks with bazookas and grenades. He killed dozens of German soldiers with his rifle and BAR. He was hit by near-miss artillery and machine gun fire but kept fighting. The German attack collapsed. The American line held. Francis Currey had done the impossible.

🇺🇸 After the War: President Truman awarded Currey the Medal of Honor in January 1946. Then Francis went home to New York and became a teacher—exactly what he'd wanted to do before the war. He taught math in high schools for decades. He raised a family. He lived quietly and almost never mentioned the Medal of Honor. Most of his students and neighbors didn't know he was one of America's greatest heroes.
