It doesn't take a coin expert to estimate the possible value of a coin. When trying to determine the value of a coin, many factors come into play. Condition is one of the most important factors. Coins that are in mint state "MS" will often fetch the greatest value. However, a perfect MS70 coin is not always necessarily valuable. A coin of low mintage in circulated condition may drastically trump the value of a more common coin in perfect MS70 condition. To get started, I recommend picking up a copy of the book Red Book coins. I wish that I had known about this book when I began my self-education process for coins. It lists details regarding an array of coins and estimated values of particular coins in varying conditions. I also recommend www.anacs.com if you've identifed a coin in your collection that you feel may be extremely valuable.
