The Repeated Mistake
Years after pulling the same stunt in Egypt (Genesis 12), Abraham once again passes his wife Sarah off as his "sister." Driven by fear that the locals would kill him to take his beautiful wife, Abraham relies on human scheming—and a technical half-truth—instead of trusting God's protection.

The Righteous King vs. The Corrupt City
When King Abimelech takes Sarah, God confronts him in a dream. Surprisingly, the pagan king holds the moral high ground, pleading his innocence and the "integrity of his heart." However, ancient Jewish commentary (the Midrash and Talmud) takes a darker view of Abimelech's city, Gerar. The rabbis note that instead of offering standard ancient hospitality (food and water) to a traveling stranger, the men of Gerar immediately asked about Sarah's marital status, justifying Abraham's fear that there was "no fear of God" in that place.

Why Take a 90-Year-Old Woman?
Sarah was 90 years old at this time, so why would a powerful king take her into his harem?

The Historical View: Abraham was a massively wealthy, powerful nomadic warlord. Taking his "sister" into the royal harem was a standard ancient diplomatic move to forge a political alliance and ensure Abraham wasn't a military threat.

The Jewish Tradition: The Talmud suggests that when God promised Sarah a child, her physical body was miraculously rejuvenated, restoring the stunning beauty of her youth, making her the most beautiful woman in the region.

The First "Prophet"
Genesis 20:7 marks the very first time the word "prophet" (nabi) is used in the Bible. Interestingly, God doesn't use it to describe Abraham foretelling the future, but rather to highlight his role as an intercessor. Even though Abraham caused the mess, God tells Abimelech that Abraham will pray for his healing.
