I often get asked "What is wrong with Cosmos feathers?" and here's a short explanation. For the first three years of her life, she lived with her first mom whom she loved dearly and unfortunately her first mom passed on. Cosmo started plucking when her first mom was hospitalized and never came home. she started plucking out of grief. Before she had passed she asked if anything happened to her if we would take her deer Cosmo and of course we said yes not expecting her passing would be so soon. By the time we picked up Cosmo she had plucked her body feathers.

A lot of African grays do not like change and now she had to get used to not just her mommy being gone but to new people that she had to get used to.

Her grieving subsided but she continued to pluck. it has now developed into a behavioral/ bad habit. she does get Avian vet checked quite often during the year but most importantly she does get blood work and fecal exams done yearly. Cosmo is healthy. Unfortunately, it will be a struggle for the rest of her life to not pluck her feathers. It's almost like us chewing our fingernails they say.
