"The Division Violin" is a collection of themes with variations, set to a recurrring ground bass (continuo). Some of these are attributed to a known composer, but this one is anonymous. It was re-published with minor changes as "The Division Flute" in 1701 and is now more common in the Baroque flute repertoire.

The 8-bar theme itself is an English country dance which appears as "St. Paul's Steeple" in the first edition of Playford's Dancing Master (1651). There are two separate sets of variations to this theme in the "Division Violin". This is the first set, consisting of the theme with seven variations. There is a modern transcription at IMSLP:

I am playing the theme with all seven variations on mandolin, with the ground bass overdubbed on mandocello, fleshed out with bouzouki arpeggios and chords for a more harpsichord-like baroque continuo realisation.
