Hi welcome to Mercie J auto care, where compassion and craftsmanship come together. I’m Rick Smith, master certified technician. One of the questions we were asked was, “What causes the battery light to come on?” If you have an engine stall, it will come on because the alternator is not spinning. Bottom line is it comes on because the battery is not getting charged and so most of the time it’s a problem with the alternator. This is the part that causes the battery to get charged. On most cars, the alternator is driven by a belt so if the belt breaks and doesn’t spin it’s not going to charge the battery and the light will on come on. If we have a problem with the wiring between the alternator and the battery, that can cause a light to come on or just a failed alternator can cause a light to come on.
