Will cost of living influence the US election?

Economic history suggests that Kamala Harris should have been electorally finished long ago.

In 1980 the Republican challenger Ronald Reagan posed a rhetorical question to the nation during his final debate with the Democratic president, Jimmy Carter: “Ask yourself, are you better off than you were four years ago?”

The remark has been cited ever since as one of the reasons that Reagan went on to win a week later, and in every subsequent election in which an incumbent was standing the polling firm Gallup has asked Americans the same question.
