Here's a little hint of how a triple scale hydrometer works. So we all know we have three different scales on a triple scale hydrometer: specific gravity scale, potential alcohol scale, and Brix scale. Brix is commonly used by winemakers and brewers use specific gravity (though winemakers can, too).

Both of these are very valid scales, but there's a third scale included on this hydrometer called the Potential Alchohol scale. Now, being hydrometer manufacturers we deal with precise readings, so we're a little skeptical about potential alcohol readings, because... they're kind of guesstimates.

When you take your original gravity reading and your final gravity reading and do a little math, you'll find out exactly the alcohol content of your beer. The potential alcohol scale kind of eliminates that final gravity reading. The potential alcohol scale is really just a guess. We recommend eliminating that in your brewing/winemaking and using either a specific gravity hydrometer or Brix... and we make both.
