On 28th April 1992, Burnley came to Bootham Crescent knowing that a win would clinch them the Fourth Division title.

An invasion of 5,000 fans flooded across the Pennines to see if the Clarets could overcome a York City side heading for a bottom four finish in Division 4, and this swelled the crowd to Bootham Crescent’s biggest of the season, 7,620.

As the game kicked off there were Burnley fans at every vantage point but their party was put on hold when Ian Blackstone put the home side ahead just before half-time.

However, in the second half, York’s self-destruct tendency showed again when Dean Kiely completely misjudged the bouncing ball, allowing it to drift over his head, and John Deary forced home the equaliser.

Two minutes into injury time, Burnley scored the winning goal when Mike Conroy’s run and cross down the left was turned home by John Francis and Burnley had clinched the Fourth Division title.

York City: Kiely, McMillan, Hall, Bushell, Tutill, Stancliffe, Atkin, McCarthy, Naylor, Tilley, Blackstone.

Attendance: 7,620
