Hi everyone!! If you've had the chance to visit HAWAI'I, then you've probably heard of a MUSUBI. If you haven't, a MUSUBI is composed of packed white rice topped with a protein and wrapped around with seaweed/nori. The most popular type of MUSUBI in HAWAI'I is the SPAM MUSUBI. In HAWAI'I, the unique Hawaiian version of the dish is a result of the military troops’ relocation to HAWAI'I following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. SPAM was a main ration given to the troops thanks to its high-calorie content and long shelf life. Instead of eating it plain, the SPAM was placed on top of rice in an onigiri fashion (Japanese traditional rice ball). There are SO MANY PLACES that serve SPAM MUSUBI in HAWAI'I across ALL of the islands. Each place has their own twist/recipe on how they make their MUSUBI and what FLAVORS or other proteins they offer such as Portuguese Sausage, Chicken Katsu, Mochiko Chicken and on and on.
