Mixing Front Of House: Arriving at the Venue - with Jon Burton & Justin Grealy

Exploring your environment is an important detail when you, the sound engineer, arrive at a venue. Without knowing where you are and what state the place is in, you can't really hope to get a good mix up. Checking each loudspeaker is essential (it is amazing how often a tour engineer notices something that the house guy doesn't), as is walking the room to find hot spots and reverberant corners, as well as getting to know where your punters might position themselves once the doors open. Mixing front of house is a lot more than standing static behind your mixing console. You need to get out and about and stand where your audience is.
