The Lyrics refers Mostly to whenever Sylvian feels like he is doing well and the band are finding success, he is always subsequently bothered by regrets from his past (“the ghosts of my life”). Even though the band was finally becoming successful, David Sylvian found himself no happier than when they had started. He didn’t like being held in; he didn’t enjoy being filmed, photographed, and written about; he didn’t like people walking in his footsteps, trying to look like him. In short, he found the experience of fame underwhelming and empty.

“Broken every door” has implications of him pushing really strongly, putting in a lot of work to get where he is, but all that hard work is deemed irrelevant as he is haunted by past mistakes ruining each moment of happiness.
