We are well aware that metals such as copper conduct electricity and are used in a lot of electrical appliances. Similarly, metals such as phosphorus conduct electricity. However, insulators such as plastic, paper, and rubber do not conduct electricity at all. What do you think makes these metals so distinct?

Well, the answer lies in the term, “bandgap”. The bandgap is the distance that the electrons need to travel from the valence shell to the conduction shell in order to make them conductive.
