Developing a Novel Mechanical Strategy for Control of Billbug -- Xi Xiong

Xi Xiong from the University of Missouri shared the latest research on billbug biology and control options. Billbugs damage turf, threatening golf courses and sod farms. Issues in the United States are increasing as billbug species diversity increases and species interact. Management and monitoring of billbug is difficult because larvae live underground, and adults are nocturnal. Pitfall traps were designed to trap adults to monitor what billbug species are present and to estimate population sizes. While billbugs can be managed with insecticides, the treatment is costly and affects beneficial species as well. A turf sweeper, which was initially designed for synthetic turf surfaces is useful to collect adult billbugs from the grass and thatch. More research will be done to determine what times of day this method may work as the successful billbug captures were done by running the machine at night.
