St Dorotheus the Younger, also known as St Dorotheus of Kokos, is commemorated on January 5 in The Lives of the Saints by Fr. Alban Butler.

Born in Trebizond on the shores of the Black Sea, St Dorotheus came from a noble family. At only 12 years old, he fled his home to escape a marriage his parents sought to impose on him. After wandering for a time, he arrived at the Monastery of Janna in Amisos (modern Samsun, Pontus), where he received the monastic habit from Abbot John.

St Dorotheus soon became a model of monastic life and was ordained a priest. He was granted extraordinary spiritual gifts, including the gift of prophecy and frequent ecstasies.

One day, while outside the monastery, a mysterious stranger commanded him to found a new monastery on a mountainside near Amisos and to dedicate it to the Holy Trinity. Though hesitant to leave his brethren and uncertain about the vision, St Dorotheus obeyed after receiving counsel from his abbot.

With only one companion at first, he began construction of what would become the Monastery of Kokos, later joined by many others seeking religious life. He became its first abbot, and the monastery gained great renown.

Among the many miracles attributed to St Dorotheus:

The multiplication of bread

The saving of a ship from shipwreck

A collapsed stone miraculously returning to its place through invocation of the Holy Trinity

This account preserves the memory of a saint renowned for obedience, humility, prophecy, and miraculous power, as faithfully recorded by Fr. Alban Butler.
