Former member of North Korea’s elite details her decision to defect

Born into an elite North Korean family, Oh Hye-son opened up about her decision to defect in a February 14, 2023 interview. She and her husband, Thae Yong-ho, a former top Pyongyang diplomat, defected from the authoritarian hermit state in 2016. Oh says that she convinced her husband to defect after her family struggled to reintegrate into Pyongyang society following an extended posting at North Korea’s London embassy.
