Samana was named after the wife of 8th Shia Imam Ali al-Ridha, by their five sons (namely imam Mash'had Ali) who moved from Mashhad to the present day Samana because of political tensions with the then Abbasid Caliphate Al-Ma'mun after Al-Ma'mun poisoned and killed their father Imam Ali al-Ridha. After they get settled in the area, they named the place after their mother; Later, Mash'had Ali died there and his shrine is also located there and many Shia Muslims go there to participate in the annual Symposium held in the premises of the Shrine.the territories of Ghuram and Sunam.
While Samana is said to be a place of saints and scholars during the Mughal days, it was notorious also for its professional executioners, who served at Delhi and Sirhind. "Sayyad Jala-ud-Din", who was ordered to execute Sikh guru Guru Teg Bahadur at Delhi in 1675 was from Samana. Beg brothers, who were ordered to execute the younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh, 6 years old Sahibzada Fateh Singh and 9 years old Sahibzada Zorawar Singh, also belonged to Samana. This town was therefore one of the first places to have been sacked by Banda Singh Bahadur. In 1710 AD Battle of Samana, he also killed infamous MughalGovernor of Sirhind Wazir Khan (real name Mirza Askari) who had ordered the execution of young kids of Guru Govind Singh. Banda Singhs army took revenge on the whole city by murdering all male Muslim residents of Samana. About 10.000 unarmed civilians were slain. He had to give up Samana towards the end of 1710 AD when it was retaken by Mughals. The Sikhs retook it once again in 1742 AD under the leadership of Maharaja Ala Singh, the founder Maharaja of the Patiala State, and was recognized as a part of Banda's territories by Ahmad Shah Durrani.

Hazrat Imam Ali Ar Raza (a.s) has five sons:
Imam Mohammad Taqi- Al -Jawwad (a.s) , Syed Ali (Ra.) , Syed Jafar (R.A.) , Syed Hussain,Syed Hassan and a
daughter Fatima (R.A.). Hazrat Syed Ali was respectfully called by many nicknames viz., Imam Mashed Ali. Imam Ali Wali, Imam Sahib, And Pajpirr. He was the 8th descendant in line from Hazrat Imam Ali (a.s.) .

The Abbasid replaced the Umayyad's 90 year tyrannical rule in 750-132H ). During the period 150-260H.They deported four Imams from Medina to Iraq and detained in prison until their death. Caliphal-Mutawakkil in his reign against Imam Ali raised to ground.
The mausoleum of martyr Imam Hussain and had a water course turned over it. The last 30 years were most tragic and terrible for the descendants of Holy Prophet. Most of them who could escape, sought refuge in West Africa and India. Some times around 240H (854) . Say yes Ali (RA) escaoed with his brother and about a thousand kind and followers from the tyrannical rule of Caliph and landed at the North of the River "Gagger" In Haryana. Probably by 300H they felt secured and prudently named their settlement "Samana" Sayyeda Samana Khatoon, wife of Imam Taqi Al Jawwad. As to do so on the name of an Imam or a prominent male member of the Progeny of Holy Prophet Muhammad would have been inviting wrath of the powerful ruler of the world. Gradually Samana grew up an important centre of the teachings of Ale Mohammad.
Shahab uddin Ghauri granted the fief of Samana to his peer O murshid Syed Noor Uddin Mubarak, 15th in the line of Imam Ali (a.s) . It is reported in some journals that he built a tomb over the monument of Syed Ali (R.a.) . The present building structure was rebuilt Ajar Ud Din Khan during King Akbar's reign in 1560(967H).
Ishtiaq Ali Zaidi accompanied by his wife came after 43 years to see their motherland in 1991. He compiled and published the genealogical history of his family in 2000. Therein he discussed the prevailing socio-religious conditions as well as Eid-gaahs., Imam Bargahs and shrine of Imam Mashed Ali (RA) .
The Punjab Government invited Ishtiaq Ali Zaidi from London as a guest of honour to shed light on Hazrat Imam Sahib. He publicly confirmed that until migration Imam Mashhad Ali was known beyond any doubt as a son of 8th Imam Hazrat Ali Ar. Raza. His shrine was popularly visited by masses, so much so, his mother, before leaving home for Pakistan accompanied by her sons Nisar and Ishtiaq fearlessly walked for a mile through the dangerously deserted.
