What is Open Hysterectomy Surgery?
An open hysterectomy surgery is a procedure in which the uterus is removed through a large abdominal incision. It is a traditional approach to hysterectomy and has been performed for many years. During the surgery, the surgeon makes a horizontal or vertical incision in the lower abdomen, typically around the bikini line. The incision allows the surgeon to access the uterus and other reproductive organs for removal.

Once the incision is made, the surgeon carefully separates the uterus from surrounding tissues and ligaments. The blood vessels supplying the uterus are clamped and cut to prevent excessive bleeding. The uterus is then detached from the vagina, and if necessary, the fallopian tubes and ovaries may also be removed.

Open hysterectomy surgeries are generally performed under general anesthesia, meaning the patient is asleep during the procedure. The surgery may take a few hours, depending on the complexity of the case. After the uterus is removed, the incision is closed with stitches or staples, and the patient is taken to a recovery room for monitoring.

Open hysterectomy surgeries are typically recommended when the uterus is significantly enlarged, there are extensive adhesions or scar tissue present, or when other factors make it difficult to perform a less invasive procedure, such as laparoscopic or robotic-assisted hysterectomy. While open hysterectomy has been a common approach in the past, advancements in minimally invasive techniques have made it possible to perform hysterectomies with smaller incisions and shorter recovery times.
