FRUIT ROT OF JACKFRUIT
Fruit/Inflorescence rot of Jackfruit is caused by the soft rot fungus Rhizopus artocarpi.
At first, brown watery spots found on the fruit or inflorescence which gradually appears as grayish growth with abundant fungal mycelia and ultimately turns to black in colour and total rotting of the fruit/inflorescences. Later the infected fruit/inflorescences fall to the ground.
The germs survive in the infected plant parts and the disease spread through air, water and insects.
Management
1) Regular visit in the jackfruit orchard. Remove and destroy the infected fruits/flower on trees and fallen on the ground as and when noticed.
2) Clear up the decaying organic debris within and around the tree. Water stagnation at root zone should be avoided.
3) Prune the tree to encourage good ventilation and to reduce relative humidity in the canopy
4) Spray young fruits with Mancozeb 75%WP (Indofil M-45, Dithane M-45 etc.) @ 2.5gm/L water or Copper oxychloride 50%WDP (Blitox, Blue copper etc.) @ 4 gm/L water or Metalaxyl 8% + Mancozeb64% (Ridomil -72, Unilax, TaTa Master, MATCO etc.) at an interval of 2-3 weeks during the months of January, February and March.
5) At the end of fruit collection, dead stalks, fruit stems, diseased or insect infested stalks and dense stalks should be pruned and cleaned. After cleaning, it is better to spray the whole plant well with a fungicide and an insecticide.
