What is transforming lumbar interbody fusion or TLIF surgery
 
Our spinal column is made up of multiple blocks of bones or vertebrae which are stacked onto one another and in between any two bones there is a disc and two vertebra are locked at the back with the help of these joints known as facet joints.

when the disc gets degenerated, sometimes the movement between two bones becomes abnormal and that is known as spinal instability.

sometimes one vertebra slips forward over the another vertebra like this and the condition is known as spondylolisthesis.

In some cases the disc slips backwards and starts putting pressure on the nerves in these cases we have to remove the disc and in few cases the joints between any two vertebra become arthritic known as spinal arthritis or spondylitis which starts giving a lot of back pain.

These are the cases where patients are sometimes advised TLIF Surgery or Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion.

In TLIF surgery the purpose of TLIF surgery is to fuse these two bones together means stop the movement between any two bones and make them one block.

How do we achieve this?

In this surgery, we remove the disc between these two bones and in place of this we put a inter body cage which is made up of either peak or titanium material this cage is empty from inside as you can see in this transparent model this is the cage if we see like this this cage is empty from inside we fill this cage with the help of bone graft and we put this in between the two bones.

these two bones fuse with each other with the help of this bone graft this case helps to maintain the normal alignment of the spine.

So, that the case does not slip backward and the patient can be made to walk on the very next day of surgery we fix these two bones with the help of screws.

in any one one we put two screws one on the right side one on the left side similarly we put two screws in the bone below and we connect these screws with the help of two rods on each side which stops the movement between these two bones and prevents any slippage of this cage.
