Mr Philip Flood AO reflects on how the nature of diplomacy has changed radically during his half century of involvement. He discusses what has been achieved and issues of 'unfinished business' for Australian foreign policy makers and administrators, with particular reference to Australia's vibrant and complex relations with the diverse countries of Asia generally; to China and India in particular; and to the Australian-China-US relationship.

Mr Flood is one of the most distinguished Australian diplomats and public servants of the last 50 years. He is the only person to have headed the Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade (DFAT), the Office of National Assessments, and Australia's Agency for International Development (AusAID). His diplomatic appointments prior to becoming the Secretary of DFAT between 1996 and 1998 included Ambassador to Indonesia, High Commissioner to Bangladesh, and Minister in Australia's Embassy in the United States. He retired from DFAT in 2000 after three years as High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
