The Ryugyong Hotel was reportedly intended North Korean leader Kim II-Suin (grandfather Kim Jong un) as a rival to outshine the world's largest hotel in 1986. The South Korean built Western Stamford hotel in Singapore. construction began in 1987and was planned for completion 1989, but the coinciding fall of the Soviet Union (causing widespread economic suffering and material shortages) brought work to a halt. In 2008, construction recommended when Egyptian telecom, company Orascorn Group agreed to complete the hotel for hundreds of millions of dollars, in exchange for establishing North Korea's only mobile phone network. Luxury hotel operator Kempinski was appointed to run the hotel, with 3,000 guest rooms, 5 revolving restaurants, retailers, casino floors and 8 floors of luxury suites at the top of the pyramid shaped building. With a previously cited end date of summer 2013. Ryugyong Hotel remains incomplete and banned from public use.
