Suspect Tries to Steal Mom's Car, Pins Officer During Escape Attempt

Waterbury, Connecticut — On December 10, 2024, at approximately 10:04 AM, officers responded to a domestic disturbance at 222 Wood Street following a complaint from a local resident. The complainant reported that her son, later identified as 19-year-old David Hernandez, of Waterbury, CT was attempting to steal her vehicle, which was parked in the rear of the residence. Upon observing the vehicle, officers observed Hernandez inside the vehicle and asked him to step out the vehicle.

Hernandez did not comply with officers commands and put the vehicle into drive and attempted to flee, while the officer was partially pinned between the vehicle and the patrol car. In an effort to prevent further harm, the officer applied pressure to the vehicle’s brake pedal, bringing the car to a stop. Following a brief struggle, officers successfully took Hernandez into custody. EMS evaluated Hernandez at the scene, and no medical treatment was required. One of the officers involved sustained several abrasions and was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation. The officer was later released after receiving treatment.

Hernandez has been charged with the following offenses:
Assault on an Officer
Drinking while Driving
Interfering with an Officer
Criminal Mischief 1st Degree
Operating a Motor Vehicle without a License
Unsafe Movement of a Stopped Vehicle

Hernandez remains in the custody of the Connecticut Department of Corrections on a $250,000 bond.
