This river is slated for destruction by a proposed mine that would be the largest open pit mine in the world. A new mining bill that was passed in March would make it possible for the mining company to completely devastate the pristine area that so many people rely on for food, hunting, and tourism, and mostly, water. This river flows through the "everglades of the north" that create the wild rice beds that the Bad River Tribe harvests for a way of life that is central to their existence. It then flows into Lake Superior. The mine is overwhelmingly opposed by the people of Northern Wisconsin because it would pollute the entire watershed and destroy their lives, providing very few jobs for local people. The new mining bill was written by the mining company and will allow them to destroy 22 miles of the Penokee Range, fill in wetlands, and move ahead against public outcry.
