How To Identify Wild Lettuce (AKA Opium Lettuce)

Описание к видео How To Identify Wild Lettuce (AKA Opium Lettuce)

Another video with some more information on identifying wild lettuce. The wild lettuce growing in my yard is lactuca serriola, while true opium lettuce is lactuca virosa. Several of the lactuca species can be used just like the virosa to make medicine. I have already dried the leaves for teas and smoking, and have made a tincture and will post the instructional video tomorrow.

This is not an opiate but was given this common name in the 1800s because it was used in place of opium due to it's analgesic and sedative properties.

A summary of how to identify wild lettuce species. First become aware of what species of wild lettuce grow in the US. The most common ones from my experience are the lactuca serriola and canadensis. These varieties can be used for medicine making, I have not heard of any other species besides these and the virosa being used for medicine, if you find another species you can ask your local herbalist If it is worth your time to process into medicine.

1) Look for spines on midrib of underside of leaf. This may not be present in canadensis immature forms.

2) Cross section of midrib of leaf will be a triangular shape!

The two main benefits of this plant are it being an analgesic (pain relieving) and sedative. So this plant is most commonly used for pain relief, insomnia, sleep issues, and is often used topically for pain relief as well. It is also known to be good for the respiratory system. This is a potent plant with many benefits, but it is not a plant one would consume daily for long term use. Use as needed for pain management and more. Remember to always properly identify you plants before consuming and do your research, especially if you have pre existing conditions or are on medications.
