George C. Scott played World War II hero, General Patton, in the 1970 film Patton. When he was nominated for the Best Actor in a Film Oscar in 1971, however, he refused the honor. He didn't like how Award Show's such as the Academy Awards pitted actors against each other but he also had a lack of faith in the integrity of the Academy as well.

This video is going to show you why Scott refused the award, why the Academy nominated him in the first place, what the award symbolized at the time not only for Scott but also for the film industry, and also what other actors have refused Academy Awards as well.

George C. Scott is absolutely one of the finest actors of the 20th century. He doesn't need an award for that fact to be obvious. Some of his other noteworthy films include Stanley Kubrick's 1964 dark comedy Dr. Strangelove, and 1971s The Hospital. For the latter film, he was nominated yet again by the Academy for a Best Actor Award.

He would receive another Golden Globe Nomination for Best Actor in the 1978 double feature Movie Movie. He would also win a golden globe in 1997 for the mini-series 12 Angry Men. There is no question that he is an incredible actor, he just didn't need a trophy to tell him so.
