As we’ve talked about at great length in past bitesizes, wood never stops moving. Another important thing we need to understand when working with wood is location, location, location! Relative humidity, or the amount of moisture in the air, can be problematic for the freshly bought wood that you just bought from the lumber store. This means that the wood you grabbed in the icy air conditioned store and brought home to your hot shop is, more than likely, trying to adjust to its new home. Cutting or planing the stock, at this point will do nothing but give you problems. The board that you planed down and dimensioned at the beginning of the week might be a twisted mess by the end of the week.

To avoid this problem, allow any wood that has changed location, even if it’s in a separate building from your work area, to shop dry. This process will allow the wood to adjust its moisture and temperature to its new environment. Failing to give your new purchase a week or two to adjust will create more work and more misery in the long run. That’s why it’s extremely important to make sure that all stock is purchased and shop dried, before starting the project.
