(20 Jan 2017) British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson held talks with Myanmar's leader Aung San Suu Kyi in the country's capital Naypyitaw on Friday, amid concerns about allegations of human rights abuses in the country..
Johnson is under pressure from British lawmakers to press Suu Kyi on alleged abuses against Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine State.
The Myanmar military is conducting an intensive anti-insurgent sweep there following deadly attacks by a shadowy guerrilla force against police posts last October that left nine men dead.
They have been accused of murder, rape and the destruction of villages in the course of the operation, which some see as an attempt to drive out the Rohingya, who are widely viewed in Myanmar as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.
The United Nations says about 65,000 have already fled into Bangladesh since the sweep began.
The military has denied committing abuses.
Johnson is on a two day trip to Myanmar and will travel to the former capital, Yangon, on Saturday.
