FAQ Water Watchers

1. What is the best way to save someone?
A: The main thing to remember is to not touch the person directly. There are three types of non-contact actions. First, call for help as loud as you can, draw attention to you and the swimmer. Direct them to kick their legs, roll on to their back, stay calm. Second, try throwing something out to them such as a lifejacket, pool noodle or other buoyant objects. Third, try to reach an object to them to grab on to like a noodle or a rope. Be sure to get your body low or on the ground so that you cannot be pulled in too. For further training please see your local pool or Lifesaving Society.

2. What are recommended lifejacket and PFD colours?
A: Red, Orange, or Yellow are going to be the most visible.

3. Where do you buy lifejackets?
A: Online or any local sports/recreation store. Ensure you look for Transport Canada approved lifejackets and PFDs. You will find the Transport Canada logo on the inside of the jacket.

4. What is the difference between a lifejacket & a Personal Floatation Device (PFD)?
A: A PFD is designed for comfort for sporting activities. A PFD provides more freedom of movement and is recommended for individuals who are learning to swim but not entering deep waters. A lifejacket is designed to roll a person on their back in the event they fall into the water for emergency use. With most of the padding being in the front; if a person was to fall unconscious in the water, they would float on their back. Life jackets are recommended for boating-related activities.

5. How do I know if a life jacket fits properly?
A: Check the recommended height and weight for the size of the life jacket you have. You can also Use the Thumbs Up test, give 2 thumbs up and reach under your lifejacket at the shoulders. If you can lift the jacket above your chin or ears, check the sizing.

6. When should I replace my life jacket?
A: If you notice obvious signs of wear and tear, such as rips, broken straps or buckles, fraying, material starts to become see through. Also, if you are unable to zip the lifejacket or the buckles.

7. How should I dispose of a PFD or lifejacket?
A: If a Lifejacket or PFD becomes unwearable due to wear and tear, it’s important to dispose of it properly by cutting the straps and arm holes so that it cannot be used again.

8. Are inflatable floaties or arm bands safe alternatives for kids?
A: Inflatable arm bands or floaties can keep a child afloat but are not recommended as an alternative to a lifejacket or PFD. Floaties can slip off and are not considered a life-saving device. A PFD helps keep a person afloat, but it doesn’t prevent accidents, entanglement, or exhaustion. These devices do not replace adult supervision. Kids are top heavy and can tip forward easily while wearing these devices. They should only be used with adult supervision.

9. What do I do if I get blue-green algae on me?
A: Take a shower with soap and water.

10. Where can I learn more about drowning prevention and further my knowledge on the topic?
A: You can find more information and take courses at your local pool. You can also find more information and public resources from your Provincial Lifesaving Society office or website.

11. How long should I actively “watch” before taking a break? Is there a rotation system?
A: You should actively watch for about 15–20 minutes at a time. This time frame helps prevent fatigue and keeps your attention sharp, which is critical for spotting hazards or responding quickly to emergencies.

12. How do we identify a Water Watcher?
A: You can identify designated water watchers by their hyper vigilance; they could wear a whistle or carry a first aid kit. Ensure everyone is aware of who your designated Water Watcher(s) is/are.

13. What should you do in un-lifeguarded and crowded community pools?
A: Have an emergency contingency plan for yourself, make sure that you are taking breaks and having other water watchers available to help you.

14. How can we educate parents or guardians on the importance of designating a water watcher?
A: We can educate parents and guardians on the importance of designating a water watcher by raising awareness through public education efforts. This includes sharing informative webinars like this one, which is available on YouTube, and distributing educational resources from trusted organizations such as the Life Saving Society.
