If a deaf patient’s insurance plan does not cover the costs of sign language interpreting services, a healthcare provider CANNOT:
-Ask the deaf patient to bring their own sign language interpreter.
-Bill the deaf patient for sign language interpreting services.
-Insist on using other methods of communication (e.g. writing back and forth) that would result in the denial of effective communication.
-Turn the deaf patient away or unreasonably delay an appointment.

Bottom line: Healthcare providers are required to provide equal access and are most likely responsible for providing a sign language interpreter when one is requested and covering associated costs.

Tips for deaf patients:
-Try to request an interpreter in writing (email) AFTER your appointment is scheduled. This makes it much easier to prove discrimination.
-If the doctor’s office refuses to provide an interpreter because your insurance plan does not cover the costs, you can send them the following links (press down to screenshot):

You can also contact your state’s commission/office for the deaf and hard of hearing for assistance.

Note: If you are not the patient but you need or want to go to an appointment with someone, the healthcare provider must provide you with equal access, as you would most likely be considered a “companion” under the ADA.
