Plants are able to grow for their entire life and use this ability to move and explore the surroundings. This property has been the inspiration for a novel paradigm of movement in robotics: moving-by-growing. We have developed a robot that uses this ability via an additive manufacturing-based technique. The system has a 3D printer-like mechanism and uses a thermoplastic material to build its own body adapting, therefore, the shape to the environmental constraints and demanded tasks. A robot that is able to create its own shape like this, can find application for a variety of fields, including for example environmental monitoring and archeology.
